Book Review: The Chocolate Diaries by Karen Scalf Linamen

The Chocolate Diaries: Secrets for a Sweeter Journey on the Rocky Road of Life by Karen Scalf Linamen reads like an evening out with the girls. In this enjoyable book, Linamen blends the themes of life, loss, faith, and chocolate. Chocolate becomes a metaphor for the things — such as faith and friends — that help us cope with life’s bitter trials, or rocky roads. Throughout the book you will find bite-sized tidbits called Sweet Secrets, as well as recipes and reflective questions.

In a conversational, engaging style, Linamen tackles complex subject matter, such as a detailed explanation of the toxic effects of stress, and the chemical makeup of tears. She shares her personal trials, as well as bittersweet stories of other people. The need for faith, prayer, and a saving relationship with Jesus Christ is emphasized.

I highly recommend this book, particularly for women in the midst of rocky roads and bittersweet moments — and who isn’t? Read The Chocolate Diaries and savor every chapter. And try some of the recipes — I did!
