Book Review: PrayerWalk by Janet Holm McHenry

Every weekday morning, author Janet Holm McHenry has a date with God. In her book PrayerWalk: Becoming a Woman of Prayer, Strength and Discipline, she shares the story of her “prayerwalk” ministry. Every weekday, she embarks on her 5:00 a.m. walk through her neighborhood. Rain or shine, McHenry meets with God and follows His prayer promptings — whether it’s for family members or local business owners. She encourages the reader to make her time of praise and prayer the centerpiece of life, rather than merely “fitting in” prayer time.

PrayerWalk includes information on the physical benefits of walking, as well as advice on choosing the right shoes, clothing, and walking route. Emotions which may surface — including tears — are discussed. The author’s personal, sometimes heartbreaking experiences serve as examples of the power of a faithful prayer life. Readers learn to recognize prayer needs and answers to prayer.

I learned much more than I expected from PrayerWalk. McHenry’s straightforward testimony made me realize the many times my own busy-ness has kept me from my quiet time with God. This informative, well-organized book has taught me the value of combining physical and spiritual health. Christian women who want to deepen their prayer life, become physically fit, and make their relationship with God the focal point of each day will find this book inspiring. PrayerWalk is a wonderful gift — for a friend or for yourself.

  1. Making prayer and praise the centerpiece of life, this is the way I would like to change my daily routine. A delightful review and a book I must read.
