Yes, that’s right. Summer is winding down, the grass is crispy, and apple-picking season is upon us…but New York City is immersed in the 2012 spring fashion collections. Most of us don’t have a bank account that will cover an entire designer wardrobe, but the cool colors and flowing fabrics inspire and lift spirits.
When I was in college in New Hampshire, my best friend and I pored over glossy fashion magazines and savored perfume samples. We treated ourselves to “mental health” days at the mall and learned that the bargains on high-end clearance racks often had lower price tags than items in discount stores. Years and a few hard lessons have taken a toll on the unabashed exuberance of those days, but whenever I see Vogue or Elle magazine in a store, I think of my friend.
Back to the 2012 spring collections. I’ve caught some of the online coverage of the New York runway shows, and can’t wait to treat myself to some less pricey alternatives. Colorful clutches and soft, drapey tops, pants and skirts were featured at Diane Von Furstenberg’s show, while brilliant colors and geometric designs were featured by Stella McCartney. Just a couple of pieces, such as a purse, blazer or blouse, can update everything else.
Pantone, the respected authority on color and color matching, has announced trends for spring 2012. Designers have favored bold colors, such Tangerine Tango, Sodalite Blue and Sweet Lilac. This trend continues a similar theme of the fall 2011 collections. For inspiration and a look at samples, visit www.pantone.com.
